7) Question of the Month about Software Training:Each month Scott Turton will answer a current or important question that we have received about computer and software training.
October 2007 Question of the Month:I'd like to carry some of my files and documents with me on a USB drive so wherever I go I can access and edit them using their associated applications. Which applications can I install and run directly from a USB drive?
Answer:
USB drives are, without a doubt, the best way to carry and use your data and applications on various computers in different locations. They are better that other types of portable media, such as 3 -1/2 diskettes and rewritable CDs. These small drives are very convenient to use and they can store a lot of data. The prices for these types of drives have been coming down, and you can purchase them for much less than what they cost a couple years ago.
You can easily access your files and the applications using these files, all from your USB drive. To be safe and secure, be sure to read and follow the suggestions on this page, Safe Portable App-ing. The following is a list of portable applications you can install on a USB drive and use with their associated files that also can be located on this portable drive.
