California State University Northridge is offering the following HTML and Web Design Training Guides on their self-study training web site. These will help you get started with creating web pages, learning how to code HTML, and also help you think about your web site design strategy, guiding you on style, purpose, and organization.

    HTML: Beginner’s Guide

This document provides basic instructions for coding in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to create a Web page (an HTML file) on your desktop computer.

    Introduction

    Creating an HTML File
Saving & Viewing Your HTML File
    Updating (Revising) a Web Page

    Design and Accessibility

    Designing an Effective Web Page

A Web page is a place people visit to obtain information. Web pages can be informational (such as those maintained by CSUN organizations such as University departments) or personal  (as in the case of individuals who wish to communicate something about their own backgrounds and interests). For a business Web page, there may be an interest in marketing products or services.

When you design a Web page, think about such things as purpose, organization, and style, as well as copyright laws and plagiarism. Making your pages readable to all who view them is also important (see next section).

How to Make Your Web Pages ADA Compliant

    Some Accessibility Suggestions

Following are some general suggestions for helping to make your pages readable to all who view them.

    Hearing Access
    Visual Access
    Mobility Access
    Cognitive Access

    Simple HTML Tutorial

HTML is an abbreviation for HyperText Markup Language and is what is used to program web pages. It is used by placing HTML tags and codes into text (marking up the text) so that  web browsers can understand it and display it as the author has designed the page.

Here are several methods on programming web pages with HTML:

    • using a regular text editor to write the web page content and manually place the HTML tags and code into and around the text. Not very easy for large web pages and sites. Many freeware text editors are available on the web.
    • using an HTML editor; which functions as a text editor, except the HTML tags and code are inserted around the text by using menu options and buttons. Arachnophilia is one of these tools.
    • using a word processor, such as Word or OpenOffice.org’s Writer, and saving the file in HTML format. One downside to using Word with this method, is the file will be much larger than needed and Microsoft proprietary codes will be inserted along with standard HTML.
    • using a GUI web page editor, as FrontPage or Nvu, with which you design, construct and write the web page, and in the background the application writes the HTML code for you.
This tutorial will teach you the HTML tags and code required for developing you own web pages. You can write your web pages in a text editor using HTML code, or you can first use a GUI editor and then edit the HTML directly to tweek the way the page looks and displays.

Introduction and Intermediate HTML Workshop Tutorials

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, and is used for coding and developing web pages. It consists of ASCII text with special tags. The tags, which begin with < and end with >, are used to define the structure and appearance of the web page document.

Here are two HTML workshop tutorials (Introduction and an Intermediate), from West Virginia University. They review the HTML tags, give you an explanation of the tag, and show you how it appears on a web page. The introduction handout shows basic HTML topics such as paragraph and heading tags, lists, special characters, inserting hyperlinks, and images. The intermediate HTML handout covers colors, backgrounds, fonts, horiztonal rules, lists, tables, forms, frames, and meta tags.

    Dynamic HTML (DHTML) Training Course

This is a freely available training course covering the material you need to learn and understand Dynamic HTML (DHTML) and to develop attractive, compelling, and interactive web sites. This training course teaches you how to use DHTML and how its collection of technologies are designed to work together. For each training module below, a link for text-only training content is listed first, followed by the link for computer based training (CBT) with Graphics, for which the quizzes are not freely available and Internet Explorer is required. Dynamic HTML: DHTML and Style Sheets: Text-only training: tinyurl.com/m3twu CBT training: tinyurl.com/r2j4w In this training unit, you’ll learn how Cascading Style Sheets, scripting languages, advanced multimedia effects, and data binding all work together to help you create compelling Web-based documents and applications. Dynamic HTML: Using JavaScript: Text-only training: tinyurl.com/my5ox CBT training: tinyurl.com/oeygt In this training unit, we’ll examine a basic requirement of Dynamic HTML — a scripting language for instructions. We’ll briefly compare the two major scripting languages available, and why JavaScript is a strong choice. We’ll also begin examining the basic building blocks of JavaScript, including statements, blocks, and comments. Dynamic HTML: Objects and Events: Text-only training: tinyurl.com/lpyra CBT training: tinyurl.com/l795a In this training unit, you will learn what an object model is and how it relates to raw data. Dynamic HTML: Styles and Content: Text-only training: tinyurl.com/reeaj CBT training: tinyurl.com/qayno In this training unit, you’ll learn about dynamic styles. This DHTML feature lets you dynamically change the characteristics of style elements during runtime. You’ll learn how to change font styles, sizes, and colors. Dynamic HTML: Data from Other Sources: Text-only training: tinyurl.com/ngyeu CBT training: tinyurl.com/m73d7 In this training unit, you will learn about the differences between traditional forms of server-side data binding and newer forms of client-side data binding. You will also learn how DHTML client-side data binding has made advances over early methods of JavaScript client-side data binding.
