This beginning free online course in Adobe Illustrator CS will introduce you to the basics of creating illustrations and artwork. You’ll learn how to draw a few basic simple objects, make an object look three dimensional, create artwork with Adobe Illustrator’s powerful drawing tools, and use the Type tools to work with text in a very fun and creative way. Lesson 2: Basic drawing tools In this lesson, you’ll experiment with the Pencil and Brush tools and use the Symbol Sprayer in a simple art project. You’ll have fun as you learn about the versatility of Illustrator CS. You’ll learn how to draw straight and curved-line segments with the Pen tool. Lesson 3: Draw simple objects and use color In this lesson, you’ll learn how to draw simple objects with basic shapes. You’ll see that when you make a few simple modifications to the points of the paths, use some transformations such as shear (skew), that your object begins to take shape. All you need to do is add some color. You’ll draw a simple coffee mug and a box. You’ll learn how to create, select, and apply colors in special ways using the gradient and the blend. This makes your object look realistic. Lesson 4: Layers, additional techniques, and 3-D In this lesson, you’ll get an introduction to layers and learn how to use them to organize your objects. You’ll learn more ways to use blends to make objects look three-dimensional, to make several copies of one object that vary in size, to see how one object can change into another, and to rotate objects. You’ll also get a brief introduction to the 3-D effect, which is a new feature in Illustrator CS. Lesson 5: Use type creatively and graphics from other sources In this lesson, you’ll learn a few of the creative ways you can work with type in Illustrator CS and how to add Adobe Photoshop images to your Illustrator document. You’ll learn three ways to use type: type as text, type on a path, and type changed to a graphic. You’ll also learn how easy it is to create type that follows a wavy line and to reshape different characters for logo designs and monograms. Lesson 6: A poster project In this lesson, you’ll create a poster using objects you created in the previous lessons. You’ll also learn four basic design principles and how to use them to take your poster from ordinary to outstanding.
